Gone so long

Hi All,

I have not been doing much with my blog as you may have noticed. I am not sure if anyone is viewing it any more.

If there is interest I will post more funny things "Out of the Mouths of Babes".

Take care

CPL 2.0 - The End

CPL 2.0 is finally done. I have completed all that was asked of me and some was done on my own time.

Saturday, May 29, 2010

Be careful what you ask, you may just get an answer!

This was from an annoymous contributor...

My friend's small grandson got lost at the shopping mall...
He approached a uniformed security guard and said, "I've lost my granda!"
The guard asked, "What's he like?"
The little tyke hesitated for a moment and then replied,
"Molson Canadian, and women with big boobs."

CPL 2.0 - Tweet, Twitter and Time Wasting

• Armed with a bit of knowledge about what Twitter is all about, share your thoughts on this fast growing online phenomenon.OR • What kind of information is being posted by the library accounts above? What kind of information should libraries post?Note: you don't have to sign up to Twitter to complete this exercise.

My first impression is that people need real hobbies and to get out for a walk and/or one-on-one talk with their friends instead of spending their free time anonymously exchanging trivial and sometimes angry conversation. They have far too much time on their hands, however I do not have enough time to be following everything that we have been asked to sign-up for/look in to. To be honest, all of the social media we have been looking at are starting to blur in my mind.

I appreciate that twitter would be interesting to the public, as so many people travel at the speed of gossip, but at this point I feel that Twitter is redundant. By that I mean that each of these social media phenomenon such as Twitter, Facebook and other social media are starting to look the same. They are all trying to captivate the same audience.

That said, I understand why the library would like to have information in this forum as that is where the teens and techy people are.

I had, at one point signed up for Twitter and have since left it

How can a stranger tell if two people are married?

You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.

Here are some Jewls from children on the meaning of Love

When someone loves you the way they say your name is different. You just know your name is safe in their mouth.

Love is when you go out and eat and give somebody most of your french fries without making them give you any of theirs.

Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas If you stop opening presents long enough to listen.

These are all from the mouths of eight-year-olds.

CPL2.0 - "That Library Thang!!"

• Was the site user-friendly? Did you find it difficult to navigate?OR• Do you see any practical applications for Library Thing either at home or at work? Will you start using this site? OR• If you already use Library Thing, what’s your favourite part?

It was fairly user-friendly....too much to look at for the tour though. It wasn't so much hard to navigate, but it was difficult to find accurate information, based on multiple users posting info. An example of this is an Author's book titles being slightly wrong, so that when you are searching for an exact title, it wouldn't necessarily come up.

I believe that this is a good sight for those customers who miss "My List", however, I will not use it. I prefer to discuss my love of books and what next to read in person with my co-workers, friends etc. I also currently keep my own list and don't feel the need to transfer it to this public sight.

What is the right age to get married?

Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.

Camille, age 10

How do you decide who to marry (written by kids)

You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.

Alan, age 10

No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with.

CPL 2.0 - On-line Productivity Tools

Do you see free online tools like these eventually replacing expensive software like MS Office?
I REALLY HOPE NOT!!

OR• Do you see yourself using these tools or will you stick to more traditional methods. If you were to use one of these tools regularly, which would it be and why?

I attempted to create a document with Google Docs, but the link would not work. I did finally "google" it and created a word document. It seemed easy enough and I am sure that if you did not have Microsoft Word etc. it would be a fair substitute. Though you would need more time to see if all you needs could be met by this on-line version. As with many of these handy tools, I could see it becoming something you MUST pay for at a future date. I have also heard that people have had documents lost and when I tried to print it gave me grief and it was 3 times a charm.

As I could not access Google Docs at first, I tried the Yahoo tool called Scrybe. That was interesting and I could see a use for this for business men who travel through different time zones all the time etc.

I will probably not use this though as I don't trust them to change/be deleted in the future. I like the consistency of my documents all being compatible to what I have at home. I will not be using any of these tools. If something is free it is either frequently changed, doesn't work consistently or is eventually changed to a tool that you pay for!

It seems like these tools would be useful to those who have no other options. I only hope that the library isn't moving to this option in lieu of good solid programing such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint!!!!!!!

CPL 2.0 - Flickr and You Tube

• Comment on Flickr and YouTube. Were they user-friendly? OR• Comment on the quality, entertainment value, or usefulness of the content on these sites.

Flickr seems useful if you don't have photoshop and it is nice that you can share. I do have a problem with it being so easy to access there does not seem to be any way to prevent anyone accessing your personal pictures (you can browse for pictures without being signed up/in). If you don't use Facebook the sharing component may be of interest though.

You Tube is THE MOST public video sharing tool that I know of. Unfortunately you don't have to give permission for videos of you to be placed in public.

It is tough to search through all of the possible (for instance) "Dewey" movies to see the one that you wanted to see.

It is purely for entertainment, in my opinion and I worry about how easily personal pictures/videos can be put on the internet these days.

Also on a side note...I could not view You Tube from the work computers as it wouldn't allow this function.

CPL 2.0 - RSS Feed

• Were you able to successfully set up your RSS feed? If not, where did you run into problems? If you were successful, does this make information-gathering more convenient for you?

Yes I was able to set up RSS feed.

I can see how this would be helpful to some people who like to keep up on things, such as stocks or real estate, etc. To me, however, it just means more e-mails and information to sift through; more time wasting it is! I cancelled RSS feeds previously due to this.

Google Universe CPL 2.0

What do you like about the Google product?

There is lots to like about the Goolge products (all of them). I tried out Aardvark. It is interesting and the answer to my question came pretty fast.

What do you dislike?

I had to, once again, sign up with e-mail and yet another password, to get Aardvark to work. In order to be able to write up anything on this weeks' topic I felt I must try something new and that is the only reason why I would sign up for it.

The questions are answered by other people like you an me (no need to be an expert, just answer any question you want) and I have no confidence in the answers I received. It is fun for a lark though if you have time to do nothing else!

Would you recommend the product to friends and colleagues?

Yes, of course and I did. It is at least interesting.

Google is one of the most widely used products with our branch staff and with our public. In fact I am surprised we needed to learn this product because when we teach the Internet Part 1 and 2, we utilize Google (more and even more too) quite a bit. This is a great way to introduce people to an internet product that at the very least will get them started towards the information they are seeking. It is a great way to introduce keyword vs directory searches too.

I am always sharing things that I learn from Google and anywhere else on the internet with my co-workers if it is related to work.

Again, I was a little puzzled why we NEEDED to do this one.

Social Networking CPL 2.0

• Why do you think social networking sites are so popular? What are the main appeal factors? OR• For you, is Facebook useful or a time-waster?

First of all, Facebook is the one thing I have kept doing. The reason is that I can communicate with my family in England, Vancouver and Friends in Calgary all at once. They can see updated pictures of my family and if they post their birthdays I get a reminder so that I may be a good relative and remember their birthday. So I believe that communication is the reason for the popularity. I also find Facebook easy to use (even when they change the entire look of the pages). To an extent it can be a time-waster (and an addiction) to social network.

My second point would be that connection to the outside world doesn't seem to come in the form of too many conversations these days, but you can Blog, Tweet, Facebook, My Space etc until you are blue in the face and who doesn't love seeing someone make a comment on their post or add a new photo?! I have reconnected with people I went to school with, so I find that if I limit myself per day it is a great tool. When abused it is an incredible time waster..."MUST PLAY FARMVILLE!!!!!!" In fact the customers at the library are in a state of panic if the public computers are down and they are unable to farm for the day or post pictures (one of the most asked set of questions we get is about downloading things or doing things on Facebook - I find we do not have time to help with these requests, nor can they download anything from our public computers unless pictures are on a memory drive...no new applications can be downloaded either)

As far as "My Space", I find it to be a poor copy cat of Facebook. You can download music and blog and do many things, yes, but there is not the variety or depth to it as there is with Facebook.

If this gets out of control and my free time is no longer free, I may have to leave Facebook behind as well.

Wiki - CPL 2.0

• How easy or difficult was it to find articles that needed editing? Were the errors you found factual or grammar / spelling?

It is incredibly easy to find articles that needed editing. In the very first article I read about "Chilldren of War" I corrected 6 grammatical/punctuational errors.

I already had an account with Wikipedia.

CPL 2.0 - Delicious

How comfortable are you using Best Websites, after this practice? Do you have any tips for using Best Websites on Delicious?

I am very comfortable using Delicious and Best Web Sites. When books are not available and the directories are not able to answer our customers' questions I go to best web sites. In fact one of my favorite sections is Music - All Music is a great tool.

The only tip I have is that if all the categories at the side confuse you, use the search at the top for key word searches. I have found surprising things there.

I have searched many of my co-workers and other CPL staff blogs and have commented on some and now follow several of the blogs.

2.0 What do you hope to learn from CPL 2.0?

I have no expectations whatsoever. I am familiar with all of the technologies we are investigating in this process, but I love surprises, so I supose I will be open to learn something I don't already know. I do not actively continue most of these technologies, however, as I found that I spent too much free time doing so, but my familiarity with all of this should benefit customers.

Out of the Mouths of Babes

This Blog will be a place to share those wonderfully honest and funny things that young children say...Having worked 6 years in a daycare and many more in the public school system, not to mention the material given to me by years of storytime with the library I have lots to share...how about you?
