CPL 2.0 - The End

CPL 2.0 is finally done. I have completed all that was asked of me and some was done on my own time.

Saturday, May 29, 2010

Be careful what you ask, you may just get an answer!

This was from an annoymous contributor...

My friend's small grandson got lost at the shopping mall...
He approached a uniformed security guard and said, "I've lost my granda!"
The guard asked, "What's he like?"
The little tyke hesitated for a moment and then replied,
"Molson Canadian, and women with big boobs."

CPL 2.0 - Tweet, Twitter and Time Wasting

• Armed with a bit of knowledge about what Twitter is all about, share your thoughts on this fast growing online phenomenon.OR • What kind of information is being posted by the library accounts above? What kind of information should libraries post?Note: you don't have to sign up to Twitter to complete this exercise.

My first impression is that people need real hobbies and to get out for a walk and/or one-on-one talk with their friends instead of spending their free time anonymously exchanging trivial and sometimes angry conversation. They have far too much time on their hands, however I do not have enough time to be following everything that we have been asked to sign-up for/look in to. To be honest, all of the social media we have been looking at are starting to blur in my mind.

I appreciate that twitter would be interesting to the public, as so many people travel at the speed of gossip, but at this point I feel that Twitter is redundant. By that I mean that each of these social media phenomenon such as Twitter, Facebook and other social media are starting to look the same. They are all trying to captivate the same audience.

That said, I understand why the library would like to have information in this forum as that is where the teens and techy people are.

I had, at one point signed up for Twitter and have since left it

How can a stranger tell if two people are married?

You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids.

Here are some Jewls from children on the meaning of Love

When someone loves you the way they say your name is different. You just know your name is safe in their mouth.

Love is when you go out and eat and give somebody most of your french fries without making them give you any of theirs.

Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas If you stop opening presents long enough to listen.

These are all from the mouths of eight-year-olds.

CPL2.0 - "That Library Thang!!"

• Was the site user-friendly? Did you find it difficult to navigate?OR• Do you see any practical applications for Library Thing either at home or at work? Will you start using this site? OR• If you already use Library Thing, what’s your favourite part?

It was fairly user-friendly....too much to look at for the tour though. It wasn't so much hard to navigate, but it was difficult to find accurate information, based on multiple users posting info. An example of this is an Author's book titles being slightly wrong, so that when you are searching for an exact title, it wouldn't necessarily come up.

I believe that this is a good sight for those customers who miss "My List", however, I will not use it. I prefer to discuss my love of books and what next to read in person with my co-workers, friends etc. I also currently keep my own list and don't feel the need to transfer it to this public sight.

What is the right age to get married?

Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.

How do you decide who to marry (written by kids)

You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.

Alan, age 10

No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with.

CPL 2.0 - On-line Productivity Tools

Do you see free online tools like these eventually replacing expensive software like MS Office?
I REALLY HOPE NOT!!

OR• Do you see yourself using these tools or will you stick to more traditional methods. If you were to use one of these tools regularly, which would it be and why?

I attempted to create a document with Google Docs, but the link would not work. I did finally "google" it and created a word document. It seemed easy enough and I am sure that if you did not have Microsoft Word etc. it would be a fair substitute. Though you would need more time to see if all you needs could be met by this on-line version. As with many of these handy tools, I could see it becoming something you MUST pay for at a future date. I have also heard that people have had documents lost and when I tried to print it gave me grief and it was 3 times a charm.

As I could not access Google Docs at first, I tried the Yahoo tool called Scrybe. That was interesting and I could see a use for this for business men who travel through different time zones all the time etc.

I will probably not use this though as I don't trust them to change/be deleted in the future. I like the consistency of my documents all being compatible to what I have at home. I will not be using any of these tools. If something is free it is either frequently changed, doesn't work consistently or is eventually changed to a tool that you pay for!

It seems like these tools would be useful to those who have no other options. I only hope that the library isn't moving to this option in lieu of good solid programing such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint!!!!!!!

CPL 2.0 - Flickr and You Tube

• Comment on Flickr and YouTube. Were they user-friendly? OR• Comment on the quality, entertainment value, or usefulness of the content on these sites.

Flickr seems useful if you don't have photoshop and it is nice that you can share. I do have a problem with it being so easy to access there does not seem to be any way to prevent anyone accessing your personal pictures (you can browse for pictures without being signed up/in). If you don't use Facebook the sharing component may be of interest though.

You Tube is THE MOST public video sharing tool that I know of. Unfortunately you don't have to give permission for videos of you to be placed in public.

It is tough to search through all of the possible (for instance) "Dewey" movies to see the one that you wanted to see.

It is purely for entertainment, in my opinion and I worry about how easily personal pictures/videos can be put on the internet these days.

Also on a side note...I could not view You Tube from the work computers as it wouldn't allow this function.
